Updated: November 2026 · Diskover team
Quick answer: Spotify doesn’t let artists upload songs directly: you need a digital distributor. With Diskover, your release reaches Spotify in less than 24 hours, with free ISRC and UPC codes, editorial playlist pitching included and the option to try 3 songs for free before subscribing (then from €1.99/month). All you need is the audio in WAV, 3000×3000 px artwork and the song’s metadata.

Can you upload music to Spotify directly?
No. In 2018 Spotify tested a tool that let artists upload their songs without intermediaries, but it shut it down in 2019. Since then, all the music you see on Spotify arrives through a distributor or a label that works with one. The distributor delivers the audio and data to Spotify (and the other platforms), assigns the ISRC and UPC codes, and collects and pays out the income your music generates.
What do I need to put my music on Spotify?
Before you start, gather these items. If any are missing, the release may be delayed or rejected:
- The master audio: in WAV format (usually 16 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz or higher). Avoid uploading MP3: you lose quality and many distributors don’t accept it.
- The artwork: a square image, ideally 3000×3000 pixels in JPG or PNG. No URLs, platform logos, prices or blurry text.
- The metadata: the exact song title, artist name (always spelled the same), collaborators, genre, language, whether it’s explicit and the release date.
- The credits: songwriters, producers and performers. They’re key to collecting songwriting royalties correctly.
- The rights: you must own the master or have permission to distribute it. If you use samples or a purchased beat, you need the right licence.
- ISRC and UPC codes: the ISRC identifies each song and the UPC the whole release. At Diskover they’re assigned for free.
How to upload your song to Spotify step by step
- Choose a distributor. Compare what percentage of royalties you keep, how much it costs, how many platforms it reaches and whether it offers playlist pitching or support in your language. We explain it in detail in how to distribute music and choose a distributor.
- Create your account and the release. Say whether it’s a single, EP or album, and upload the audio and artwork.
- Fill in the metadata carefully. A mistake in the artist name can land your song on the profile of someone else with the same name. If you already have a Spotify profile, enter your artist URI (we explain how to get your Spotify profile URI).
- Choose the release date. Schedule the release with at least 2–4 weeks’ lead time. That gives you time for the editorial pitch (at least 7 days before) and to prepare promotion.
- Submit the release for review. The distributor checks that everything meets the platforms’ rules and delivers it to Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, TikTok and the rest.
- Claim your Spotify for Artists profile. As soon as your music is in the system, you can access stats, edit your profile and pitch.
- Pitch to editorial playlists. From Spotify for Artists, at least 7 days before release. We show you how in our Spotify pitch guide.
How long does it take for a song to appear on Spotify?
With Diskover, less than 24 hours. Once the release is approved, we deliver it to Spotify and it’s available in under a day. It’s one of the fastest turnarounds on the market: other distributors quote 1 to 3 days or more.
That speed saves you when you’re in a hurry (a collaboration that comes out overnight, a track that’s taking off on TikTok), but for a planned release we recommend uploading it 2–4 weeks in advance. That way you can do the editorial pitch (Spotify requires it at least 7 days ahead), appear in your followers’ Release Radar and prepare the pre-save, which is free at Diskover.
On the PRO plan you can also choose the exact release time on Spotify, useful for coordinating premieres with a music video or a live show.
How much does it cost to upload music to Spotify?

On price alone there are similar options. Diskover’s difference is in what isn’t in the table: release on Spotify in less than 24 hours, editorial playlist pitching included in every plan (with placements every week on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Amazon), official Spotify partner for Discovery Mode, fast, human support from our offices in Madrid, our own recording studios and film set (10% off for Unlimited and PRO artists) and micro-influencer campaigns on ZYNK Creators.
Is there a completely free option? We look at it in free music distribution: how to upload your song to Spotify without paying.
Common mistakes when uploading music to Spotify
- Spelling your artist name differently on each release.
- Putting “feat.” or collaborators’ names in the title instead of in the artist field.
- Using low-resolution artwork or artwork with brand logos.
- Releasing without lead time and missing the editorial pitch.
- Buying streams or using “playlists” that promise guaranteed plays. Spotify penalises artificial streaming; we explain it in penalties for artificial streams.

Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a song to Spotify without a distributor?
No. Spotify only accepts music through authorised distributors and labels. You need a distributor for your song to appear on the platform.
What audio format does Spotify require?
Distributors usually ask for the master in WAV (16 or 24 bit, 44.1 kHz or higher). The distributor converts it to the format each platform needs.
What size should a song’s artwork be on Spotify?
The recommendation is a square 3000×3000 pixel image in JPG or PNG, with no platform logos, URLs or pricing information.
How far in advance should I upload my song?
Between 2 and 4 weeks before release. That way you can pitch to editorial playlists, which Spotify requires at least 7 days ahead, and prepare promotion.
Do I need to be registered as self-employed to upload music to Spotify?
Not to upload music. Once you start earning regularly, it’s a good idea to check with a tax adviser how to declare that income.
How long does Diskover take to release a song on Spotify?
Less than 24 hours from when the release is approved. Even so, we recommend uploading 2–4 weeks in advance so you can do the editorial pitch.
How much does it cost to upload music to Spotify with Diskover?
You can try 3 songs for free. After that, the Starter plan costs €1.99/month (you keep 80%) and Unlimited €9.99/month (you keep 100%). For projects with a track record there’s the PRO plan, with no subscription and on a percentage basis.
