The music industry has changed radically over the years; it used to be unthinkable for an artist to succeed without signing to a record label. Today artists have other options, such as being independent artists, that is, artists who emerge on their own without the involvement of major labels.
Although they are largely self-sufficient, these artists also need help. Some of the reasons to support them are their talent, creativity, entrepreneurship, effort, enthusiasm and the time and money they invest, as well as the fact that they have small teams, face fierce competition, are under constant pressure and need to earn money.
For these reasons and more, here are some tips you can use to support their music project:
- Engage with their content: follow them on social media, keep an eye on their latest content, join their lives, comment on, share and save their posts.
- Go to their shows: support the musician at gigs, concerts and signings, and try not to return your tickets.
- Buy their merch/music: buy and give music and products created by the artist. Give their merch to people around you who you know will like it.
- Listen to and save their music. Recommend their songs and add them to your playlists.
- Send them positive messages: sending messages of support that value their work as an artist can be an extra boost of motivation.
- Pre-save their song. The more fans pre-save a release, the more weight it will have in the digital platforms’ algorithms.
- Donate: platforms like Spotify have a fundraising section on the artist profile.
- Be active in their fan community: take part in their release promotions, make TikToks with them, create fan accounts, share memes, record covers and build community with other fans.
- Sign support initiatives. Get involved in projects focused on helping this kind of artist.
These small contributions can help your favourite artists more than you can imagine to get their talent and music discovered.
